Committees

  1. Access to Care: This committee's activities include:
    • advocating for legislative changes that will affect health care coverage for residents across all ages of the continuum but particularly those less than 65 years old;
    • bringing together initiatives/partners already addressing access issues; and
    • developing community and agency-based strategies to make measurable improvements in access to care for the uninsured and underinsured residents of Durham.
  2. Injury Prevention: The Injury Prevention Committee is focusing on sharing information about local injury prevention and safety resources, gathering baseline data about injuries in Durham County, and spreading a common message about how to prevent injuries in our community.
  3. Infant Mortality: The Infant Mortality Task Force brings together community members and service agencies to create community awareness of infant mortality and to develop community appropriate prevention strategies.
  4. Mental Health: The Mental Health Committee seeks to increase public awareness of mental illness and access to mental health services.
  5. Obesity and Chronic Disease: This committee's intent is to provide a community-based approach to address the growing problem of overweight and obesity, factors that contribute to the development and complications associated with many chronic illnesses.
  6. Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Syphilis and HIV/AIDS: The HIV/STD Community Advisory Council has a very diverse membership with a large grassroots-community member base. The group focuses on strategies to prevent the spread of syphilis and HIV/AIDS, which disproportionately impacts the minority community, particularly women of childbearing age and college students.
  7. Substance Abuse: This committee coordinates efforts on awareness, treatment, and prevention of substance abuse and addiction illnesses in the Durham community.
  8. Teenage Pregnancy: The Durham Committee for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (DCAPP) addresses teen pregnancy prevention with a collaborative approach.
